Along their journey, Janeé and Josh were supported by a dynamic and collaborative group of providers who are featured in the film.
Midwife
Lisa Davis is a Certified Nurse Midwife who practices homebirth with the wisdom of traditional midwifery. Her practice, NuBirth Midwifery, serves Oakland and the greater Bay Area and she travels as far north as Sacramento. She is the mother of two adult daughters and the grandmother of two grandsons. She has spent time doing activism and organizing work around anti-police terror but has now dedicated her whole self to the practice of midwifery. She believes that birth is sacred and trusts the body’s ability to birth. She serves all people but specializes in African-centered care using the Midwifery Model of Care and the wisdom of Black midwives. She has over 20 years of experience working with birthing people as a labor and delivery nurse. Lisa has witnessed the wisdom of traditional midwifery improve outcomes and experiences. She is passionate about looking at ways to make homebirth accessible to all Black families that desire it, as she sincerely believes that homebirth not only empowers but heals.
Doula
Davon Crawford is a full spectrum doula who serves Bay Area clients through her company Divine Birthright. Davon’s path to a doula calling and career was sparked by her own personal experiences. While pregnant with her first three children she knew very little about what to expect, and the options she had. This led her to unnecessary interventions and traumatic experiences. After those experiences, she began looking for more options and started educating herself. Learning about her options gave her the confidence she needed as she journeyed through her last pregnancy fearlessly. Davon believes childbirth is an experience in a person’s life that holds the power to transform them forever and having emotional, physical, and spiritual support throughout this sacred voyage can make a difference. The growth she experienced through her birth experiences has made her a source of healing and compassion for other birthing people.
Student Midwife
Bria Bailey is originally from Memphis, TN and has been living in The Bay for over 5 years. She is a double mastered Maternal Experience Designer, Full Spectrum Doula, and student midwife with over 11 years of experience working with families, and clinicians. Her care is holistic and rooted in her knowledge of integrative therapies such as mindfulness, homeopathy, energy medicine, and herbalism. She prioritizes care for Black and POC birthing families as well as survivors who birth.
Labor and Delivery Staff
Highland Hospital in Oakland, California is known to be one of the best places in the Bay Area to give birth, especially if you are a Black birthing person. Highland is home to an exceptional program called “BElovedBIRTH Black Centering,” which features a package of prenatal and postpartum care supported by a midwife-led, all-Black dream team of doctors, midwives, advocates, doulas, lactation consultants, nutritionists, psychologists and more. Davon and Bria both serve as doulas for the program, with doula training provided by “Born for This” partner organization Black Women Birthing Justice.
